Dear friends and colleagues standing in solidarity with Ukrainian publishers,
In July 2026, Ukraine suffered one of the largest ballistic missile barrages since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022. The attacks on Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Kherson regions killed at least six people, with dozens more wounded, and caused fires and severe destruction to residential buildings, offices, and industrial facilities across the country.
A series of powerful explosions in Kyiv, involving 41 missiles and 125 drones, caused massive damage to Ukrainian publishers and printing facilities. While no employees have been reported injured, the losses to books and publishing infrastructure have been immense, with approximately 850,000 books reported lost.
Losses in July amounted to 5% of annual book production, a very significant blow to publishers. Furthermore, the destruction of the Konvi printing house works has, in addition to the direct damage, already caused delays in printing, with funds invested in book layouts being tied up, which is in turn leading to further financial losses for publishers.
On 1 August Russian forces attacked the warehouses of the ‘Ranok’ publishing group, which, in addition to its main publishing house, includes the imprints Readberry, ‘Zhorzh’, ‘Fabula’, ‘One More Page’, Varvar Publishing, ‘Osnova’, ‘Svoe’, Korali Books, ‘Kenguru’, 4mamas and the national bookshop chain ‘Knyholand’ (51 retail bookshops and several websites).
According to media reports, in addition to the 600,000 textbooks that were being prepared for dispatch to schools, nearly 8 million copies of books (28,800 different titles) – from both the “Ranok” Corporation and other Ukrainian publishers – were destroyed. The total loss is preliminarily estimated at nearly 1 billion hryvnias (200 million euros).
According to the corporation’s owner, Viktor Kruglov, there were two morning strikes by russian missiles within a few minutes of each other, suggesting this was a deliberate Russian attack rather than an accidental incident. Everyone knew it was a book warehouse. And the regional children’s hospital is nearby.
Taking into account the fire on 1 August, we can speak of catastrophic losses for the book industry, estimated at 30% of annual output. As russians target printing works and warehouses, it is not individual publishing houses that are under attack, but the entire book publishing community.
The destruction of textbooks poses a particular danger, threatening the smooth running of the educational process from 1 September.
The Ukrainian government has responded swiftly to the situation and is already preparing appropriate measures, on which Ukrainian publishers are pinning great hopes. But the Ukrainian state will allocate money for the restoration of infrastructure. When it comes to reimbursement for books and other products, Ukrainian publishers can only rely on the book community and donations.
While recovering from the damage caused by Russia’s attacks will require enormous effort, time, and resources, on behalf of the Ukrainian Book Institute, we call on our partners and the international publishing community to support Ukrainian publishers and contribute to their recovery. Konvi Group, one of Ukraine’s largest printing companies and a major producer of school textbooks, reported the loss of approximately 600,000 books belonging to publishers including 250,000 textbooks for schools and 350,000 books of such publishing houses as Ranok, Hramota, Litera LTD, Lingvist, Knyholav, Laboratoriia, ArtBooks, ASSA, Kalamar, Atena, Aston, Bookshef, MISON, Vyshcha Shkola, Medytsyna, Apriori, Urbino and others.
Knyholav Publishing House reported the loss of nearly 250,000 books: “These books represent years of dedicated work by authors, translators, editors, designers, and printing specialists who bring Ukrainian voices to life. Once again, Russia has demonstrated that its war is aimed not only at people, but also at destroying Ukrainian culture, education, identity, and our future.”
MISON Publishing reported on social media that the office where its editorial team worked was completely destroyed by fire during the attack, resulting in the loss of approximately 200 book titles.
Ark.UA Publishing also reported damage to its offices.
RNK-Ranok corporation automated logistics center and the Knygoland distribution center in Kharkiv: nearly 8 million copies of books (28,800 different titles) – from both the “Ranok” Corporation and other Ukrainian publishers – were destroyed.
BookChef Publishing House reported the loss of approximately 800,000 books as a result of another Russian attack on 2 July 2026.

Any form of collaboration with Russian publishers or literary agencies is a weapon against Ukrainian lives, culture, and the efforts of hundreds of Ukrainian publishers who, despite ongoing missile attacks, continue their vital work.
